The Department of Paediatrics is a clinical department that trains medical students in the care of children along the line of the College philosophy which are:

a) Student centred learning: the curriculum is structured to foster and encourage students learning in the most effective way by making the programmes student centred rather than didactic teaching

b) Problem solving: the philosophy of problem as a means of effective learning is promoted without prejudice to sound preparation in knowledge of the basic medical sciences

c) Integrated Learning: Basic and Clinical Sciences are treated as a continuum

d) Philosophy of COBES: One of the main objective of the College is the training of doctors capable of working in any part of Nigeria. With the COBES programme, the student is sensitised to community health needs, assist community health efforts irrespective of its social, and economic situation, develop team spirit towards promotion of community health, and learn to put into practice scientific principles of epidemiology, statistics and preventive medicine.

Objective and Goals of the Department

Improvement of Child Health Care and survival through service, training and research


i) To improve child health care and hence survival at all levels – primary, secondary and tertiary

ii) Promote the fundamental rights of the child


i) To train under graduates and postgraduate students for the award of MBBS and Fellowship certificates respectively

ii) Participate in the training of Community Health Officers, Nurses and Post Basic Nurses in Paediatrics


i) To encourage and promote relevant and meaningful clinical and community based research into childhood health problems in order to improve knowledge and care

ii) To promote active participation of residents in clinical research under the supervision of Consultants
